
Gaming has changed a lot over the past decade. In the early to mid-2010s, titles like Grand Theft Auto V, Far Cry 4, and The Witcher 3 leaned heavily on single-core performance, which played right into Intel’s strengths. With fewer but faster cores, Intel’s CPUs dominated gaming for years.
Since then, developers have gotten much better at using multi-core processors, and several once-dominant Intel chips have started to show their age. They can still run plenty of games, but you’ll find they’re no longer built for today’s demands. If your PC still runs on one of these chips, it may be time for an upgrade so you can keep up with the latest titles.
A gaming legend that finally hit its limit
The Intel Core i7-3770K led Intel’s Ivy Bridge generation when it launched in 2012, built on a 22-nanometer process that marked a real leap in efficiency. Its native PCIe 3.0 support gave it enough bandwidth that your graphics card wouldn’t bottleneck for years, and Hyper-Threading gave this quad-core chip eight logical threads. As a K-series part, you could overclock it too, which helped it stay competitive into the early 2020s.
Fourteen years on, even a strong CPU reaches its limit. If you’re still running this chip, you’re stuck with outdated DDR3 memory, no NVMe M.2 support, and no AVX2 instruction set, which arrived with the following Haswell generation. A growing list of titles, including recent Forza games, Uncharted 4, Alan Wake 2, God of War Ragnarök, and Monster Hunter Wilds, now require AVX2 just to launch. You also won’t get official Windows 11 support, so unless you’re building a retro Linux rig, there’s little reason to hold onto it.
The budget favorite that fell behind
The i5-4690K belonged to Intel’s Devil’s Canyon Haswell refresh, released in 2014 with improved thermal material that let chips run cooler and overclock higher. It became a favorite among budget gamers, delivering strong single-core performance at a launch price of $243, and many owners pushed it past 4.5GHz.
Unlike its predecessor, it does support AVX2, but if you’re relying on this chip today, being able to launch a game doesn’t mean you’ll enjoy playing it. Its biggest weakness is the lack of Hyper-Threading. With only four threads across four cores, you’ll find it struggles with the parallel workloads modern games demand, often running at full utilization and producing micro-stutters and inconsistent frame times. It also carries the same DDR3 limitation and lack of Windows 11 support as its predecessor.
The last of the quad-core kings
The i7-7700K arrived in 2017 as part of Intel’s Kaby Lake generation, a modest refinement of the earlier Skylake chips. It supports DDR4 memory and, depending on your motherboard, an NVMe M.2 SSD, so this platform isn’t as dated as the DDR3-based chips above. Its four cores and eight threads were more than enough for games in 2017, and strong single-core performance made it one of the fastest gaming CPUs of its time.
That same year, AMD’s first Ryzen chips brought affordable six- and eight-core processors to the mainstream, setting the stage for the architecture that now powers modern consoles. As developers built games around that hardware, titles began demanding more cores and threads than the 7700K could offer. Today’s AAA games typically expect at least six cores and 12 threads, so if you’re still on this chip, its four cores have likely become your bottleneck.
The six-core chip that didn’t age as well as expected
The i5-9600K might surprise you here, since it fixed many of the 7700K’s shortcomings and is the only chip on this list with official Windows 11 support. Part of Intel’s 9th-generation Coffee Lake Refresh from late 2018, it bumped the mainstream i5 core count from four to six, a big jump when few games used more than four cores. Combined with strong single-core performance, it dominated benchmarks for years after launch.
Its major drawback is the same one that hurt the i5-4690K: no Hyper-Threading. Even the i7-9700K from the same generation skipped it, leaving the i9-9900K as the only mainstream 9th-gen chip with 16 threads. Today’s consoles are built around eight-core, 16-thread CPUs, so if you’re gaming on a 9600K, many titles will ask for more than it can deliver. You might still hit playable average frame rates, but CPU-intensive games expose it through poor 1% lows and stuttering. It also ran notably hot, often needing a serious cooler just to stay stable.
Even great chips eventually run out of road
Every CPU on this list stood out when it launched, and Intel’s focus on single-core performance kept it dominant for years. But as games got better at using multiple cores and threads, that advantage stopped being enough. If your rig runs one of these chips, you now know exactly where it falls short.
